Flashback: Miley Cyrus' cover of Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" will give you goosebumps

This is Flashback, where we’re reminiscing about some of the most iconic and obscure moments in alt-rock history. This week, we’re looking at Miley Cyrus’ compelling cover of Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness.”

Miley Cyrus has a reputation for her covers. The pop star has gone viral for everything from her 2013 “Backyard Sessions” in which she covered songs like “Jolene” to more recent live performances of rock hits like Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and the Cranberries’ “Zombie.”

One cover that’s flown a bit under the radar over the years, though, is her take on Lana Del Rey‘s “Summertime Sadness.” Cyrus swung by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge back in 2014 to sing LDR’s Born to Die breakthrough hit. Despite being in the midst of her hip-hop-influenced Bangerz era, Cyrus strips the song back, giving it a rootsy twist, led by her gruff, compelling voice. It’s just as emotionally piercing as the original version: Seriously, try not to tear up as she howls, “I think I’ll miss you forever/Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky.”

Being that the clip features a 22-year-old Cyrus covering an early LDR staple, in retrospect, it revels in early 2010s Tumblr vibes.
