Miley Cyrus leads supergroup to cover Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”

Miley Cyrus has blessed the world with an all-star cover of Metallica’s 1992 single “Nothing Else Matters.”

The stripped-down, enchanting cover comes as a dual-part re-release of Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album (aka “The Black Album”) and an upcoming covers album called The Metallica Blacklist

The track features a host of renowned collaborators, including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Elton John, whose respective drums and keyboard take the stage alongside Cyrus’ dramatically wide-ranging vocals. Yo-Yo Ma’s cello can be also be heard, giving an eerie feeling to the classic, and Metallica’s own Robert Trujillo provides a powerful bassline. Add Post Malone producer WATT to the mix and the track feels like the all-star-filled reimagining it was meant to be.

Both Metallica and Cyrus shared the track’s release June 22 on Twitter, just a few hours before a Juanes cover of “Enter Sandman” dropped.

“Honored to be in company of some of the greatest to ever do it,” Cyrus wrote in a tweet.

As a songwriter whose 2020 album, Plastic Hearts, featured legends such as Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol and Joan Jett, Cyrus has come to know when she’s in the presence of groundbreaking artists. The singer essentially rebranded herself into the physical manifestation of post-modern rock ’n’ roll through her series of ’80s covers, such as the 2020 rendition of “Heart Of Glass.” The “Nothing Else Matters” cover just further solidifies her as a cross-spectrum tour de force capable of tackling any rock genre.

The Metallica Blacklist is scheduled for release Sept. 10 via Metallica’s label, Blackened Recordings, and will feature dozens of artists performing their own takes on the 1991 classic album. In addition to the retinue included in “Nothing Else Matters,” the full roster ranges from obvious choices such as Slipknot’s Corey Taylor to more unique candidates such as indie darling Mac DeMarco and country artist Jason Isbell

The Metallica Blacklist celebrates the enduring influence of Metallica with an unprecedented 50+ artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite ‘Black Album’ cut,” the band’s website says.

Additionally, the profits from each track will benefit the respective artist’s charity of choice, including Metallica’s own community-based charity All Within My Hands. Their choices range from the Whales of Guerrero to The Happy Hippie Foundation, Cyrus’ own LGBTQIA+ anti-homelessness nonprofit.

You can see each musician’s charity of choice on their website and check out the tracklisting below.
