Miss May I were once an emo cover band

In this awesome episode of Amoeba Music's What’s In My Bag?, Miss May I frontman Levi Benton picks up releases from Underoath, As I Lay Dying and others, and discusses how they have impacted his band.

He first talks about Underoath and their 777 DVD, saying, “This was the first band that had screaming that got Miss May I to play in heavy music. We were always a cover band [that played] in basements. [We] covered Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights—nothing with any screaming.”

He adds, “That was right when [Underoath] started [gaining attention—they were all over MySpace. So we were like, ‘Let’s cover them.’ [But] nobody knew how to scream and I was the singer, so I was like, ‘I have to learn how to do this.’ We tried and it sounded horrible, but it was the first time we ever heard screaming in music. [Underoath] is the reason we are Miss May I. They changed our lives.”

Benton also talks about the 1975 and more. You can watch the episode in full below. Be sure to leave us a comment with your thoughts!
