Hear MUNA's self-love indie-pop banger "One That Got Away"

Last year MUNA won over more hearts than ever with the release of their excellent self-titled album and first record out on Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records. They’re keeping that momentum going and making us fall harder now with their latest single.

Today, the indie-pop trio featuring Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson dropped “One That Got Away.” The self-described “best band in the world” began teasing the single last week and toyed with the idea of playing it during their Coachella set — which they inevitably did.

The song is an indie-pop break-up banger — but rather than brooding about a lover being the one that got away, it’s a self-love anthem, as vocalist Katie Gavin proclaims that she’s going to be one who got away.

In a press release Katie Gavin said, “This song is just rubbing your hot ass in the face of someone who messed up their chance of being with you. It’s a bit vengeful and mean, but also fun. Fuck it. Once I sent Naomi and Jo the demo they really took the cockiness in the lyric and vocal performance and carried it to the extreme with the production of the track. It became this super bombastic, Janet Jackson-era track.”

The band also shared the video for “One That Got Away,” which is directed by Ally Pankiw and Taylor James and finds the band wheeling and dealing criminal enterprises out of a luxe Italian restaurant. Of the video, Gavin added, “Ally Pankiw, who directed the music video with Taylor James, then came up with the idea of putting the music video in a criminal underworld, which we thought fit perfectly. Plus we wanted an excuse to dress Jo up like The Bear.”
