Musicians share their favorite releases from 2016

Now that 2016 is winding down, every media outlet, blogger and YouTuber has had a chance to share their favorites from this year. But what were your favorite artists jamming? We asked tons of them to share their favorite releases from 2016. Check it out below, and see if anyone chose your favorite album.

Lynn Gunn, PVRIS

As of right now, either the new Banks record [The Altar] or the new Weeknd record [Starboy] have been my favorite of 2016. My first listen to [Starboy] I was like, “Okay, I don't hate it, but I need to listen to it again.” The second [time] I listened through, I was hooked on it.

Becca Macintyre, Marmozets

Probably Radiohead’s new album, A Moon Shaped Pool. Great band, but I’ve never been like, a diehard fan. But my mum would literally text me, and all the boys were like, “You need to listen to their new album.” I love how they’re a great band, they keep bringing out great albums and great music. They’re authentic, they’re real. You can tell they’re bringing out music for the love of it.

Cory Lockwood, A Lot Like Birds

Low Teens by Every Time I Die.

Will Gould, Creeper

I remember when Blush came out this year, there was a tangible excitement in the U.K. for it because people of all kinds of musical backgrounds like Moose Blood. So, I’m going to go with Blush by Moose Blood.

Andy Biersack, Black Veil Brides

The Stranger EP by Creeper. What's funny is that I was a fan of Creeper prior to us bringing them on tour. My crew mistakenly thought Creeper were doing all cover songs because they couldn't understand why warming up backstage, I would be singing all the lyrics to this opening band's songs!

TJ Horansky, Sleep On It

I really have been enjoying the new Into It. Over It. record, Standards. That’s up there for record of the year. I’ve also been listening to the new Microwave album [Much Love] a lot. That was incredible; they’re an incredible band. I know the guys in the band really like the Moose Blood record [Blush]; we’ve been jamming that a lot, too. We listen to that in the van a lot. Jake [Marquis], our guitar player, really likes the new Panic! At The Disco record [Death Of A Bachelor]. I think those are the top contenders for me, so far.

JB Brubaker, August Burns Red

Light We Made by Balance And Composure.

Matt Tuck, Bullet For My Valentine

Avenged Sevenfold’s The Stage. I’m good friends with those guys, but they even snuck it past me!

Jami Morgan, Code Orange

I really like the Youth Code record, Commitment To Complications. They’re a great band.

Brann Dailor, Mastodon

I’ve been listening to Neurosis’ Fires Within Fires pretty much non-stop, and we’ve got Scott [Kelly, vocals/guitar] on our new record, too.

Eddie Hermida, Suicide Silence

I loved the new Korn [The Serenity Of Suffering], and Avenged Sevenfold’s The Stage has been a huge deal for me. After the first two records, I stopped being the biggest fan, but I love that they stepped out of their box and are crushing it again with this one.

Chris #2, ANTI-FLAG

For me, PUP’s The Dream Is Over.

Justin Sane, ANTI-FLAG
I’ll go with Billy Talent’s Afraid Of Heights.

Jade Puget, AFI

You know what I really loved? The Nothing record [Tired Of Tomorrow]. We’re taking them on tour, actually. I also loved the Slothrust album [Everyone Else], which came out a few weeks ago. It’s really cool.

Chad Gilbert, NEW FOUND GLORY

I love the Regina Spektor album, Remember Us To Life. The new Bayside, Vacancy, is awesome; in punk rock music, it’s few and far between when bands grow musically. There’s a lot of diversity on that record. There’s a band from Nashville called Civilian that self-released a record, and that record is really cool.

Cody Quistad, Wage War

Haven’t Been Myself by Too Close To Touch. I really like that album.

Cam Boucher, Sorority Noise

New Frank Ocean [Blonde] is incredible. I listen to that a lot. The new Keaton Henson [Kindly Now] record is incredible. The song “Alright” that is truly a next-level piece of work. The new Bon Iver record [22, A Million] blew me away, too.

Chris Conley, Saves The Day

Two Tongues Two. [Laughs.] I’m oblivious. If they re-released [Led Zeppelin IV], then that.

Ben Barlow, Neck Deep

I like the new Waterparks record [Double Dare]. WSTR, too. I’ve heard that from the demos to the final record ready to come out. I spend a lot of time on Apple Music scrolling through the new music [section]. Sometimes I find a lot of stuff I like, other times I’m like, “Eh.” [Laughs.]

Ollie Baxxter, Broadside

Frank Ocean's Blonde.

Kellin Quinn, Sleeping With Sirens

I really like this band Highly Suspect, and Nothing But Thieves. I love the stuff ONE OK ROCK’s been putting out. I think those guys are just amazing. I like the new single Mallory Knox put out. Those are the bands I’ve been listening to.

Ryan Locke, Seaway

I'd definitely put Trophy Eyes' Chemical Miracle up there. We've been listening to that a lot. It's a big step up for those guys.

Chris Motionless, Motionless In White

It’s interesting because I feel like it’s hard for me to really get into music. I’m around it so much that when I try to listen to new stuff now, it is hard. The record I was listening to the most [this year] is probably Skold. Tim Skold put out a record, [The Undoing]. I love everything that Tim has ever done, throughout all the bands he’s been in, and that one for sure hit me hard this year.

Dave Stephens, We Came As Romans

Better Ash Than Dust by Stick To Your Guns.

Jesse Barnett, Stick To Your Guns

ArchitectsAll Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. I liked the record when they put it out, and we did a five-week tour with them and I can’t stop listening to it. I finally dove into it in a way that really kind of has been emotional to me because they recently lost [guitarist] Tom Searle, who is just an absolute fucking legend for our music scene. To see what that tragedy has done to the band and how Tom obviously left a hole in their hearts that will never be filled, but he also left this kind of profound awakening in all of them that you can just see and feel—and it’s infectious. The only regret I have when it comes to Architects is not knowing Tom better than I already did. Just seeing his genius, and that whole record is pretty much about him facing the reality of his own death and questioning all of that. Fuck, it gives me goosebumps just talking about it. But it’s incredible—an incredible, incredible record. That’s another band that inspires me and another band that says a lot of unpopular things, but they don’t give a shit. They are fighting for what is true to them and my God, what an insane group of individuals. I love every single one of them; I absolutely am head over heels in love with that band and in love with that record.

Ash Costello, New Years Day

I liked [Marilyn Manson’s 2015 release] The Pale Emperor. I like the new Rob Zombie album. It has the longest title ever. [The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser] That was a great new record in 2016. I really liked the Sylar album [Help!]—that was my favorite new band of 2016.

Andrew McMahon, Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness

I'm a sucker for Radiohead. A Moon Shaped Pool is my pick.

Tyler Ross, Being As An Ocean

It’s hard for me to answer because I get into a lot of music and a lot of different artists. I listen to song after song after song from tons of different artists, so much so that I don’t even always listen to a whole record. But for a solid record, I would say the Bon Iver record that just came out was really awesome.

Brian Sella, the Front Bottoms

One sec, let me check my Spotify… The Weight Of These Wings by Miranda Lambert, she’s like a big time famous country person. I try to keep it freaky.

Shane Told, Silverstein

I’m so not the guy to ask about these kinds of things, I still listen to Morrissey and Black Sabbath and stuff. [Laughs]. I’m going to give a shout out to my buddies in PUP. The PUP record was amazing; definitely one of the best records of 2016, for sure.
