Flashback: My Chemical Romance cover Blur's 1997 classic "Song 2"

This is Flashback, where we’re reminiscing about some of the most iconic and obscure moments in alt-rock history. This week, we’re looking at when My Chemical Romance covered “Song 2” by Blur.

In 2007, My Chemical Romance were arguably at the height of their careers, having just come off the 2006 release of their beloved album The Black Parade. Throughout 2006 and 2007, the band were everywhere promoting and touring the record, including a 2007 stop in France where they appeared on the live performance television series Tarantata.

In addition to playing some of their own tracks, the band covered “Song 2” by Britpop legends Blur. The emo band had been known to whip out the 1997 song before, playing it at shows in 2005 — and on Taratata, they really gave it their all. Performing on a floor with fans surrounded on all sides, they played up the track’s riotous sound, and frontman Gerward Way gave a jittery, punk performance, jumping about the stage.

You can bet that MCR’s love for Damon Albarn and co. runs deep, too. They named their song “To The End” after a Blur song of the same name, for instance.

Watch the performance below and you’ll be “woo-hoo-ing” in no time.
