The film is an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name by John “Derf” Backderf, which was released in 2012. The author was friends with the soon-to-be serial killer when they were teenagers back in Ohio, according to Rolling Stone.

The film stars Disney Channel star Ross Lynch, who tells the music source that he had never heard of Dahmer before auditioning for—and then landing—the role.

“They were like, 'Hey, do you know who Jeffrey Dahmer is?' I had no idea,” Lynch told Rolling Stone. “I thought it was awesome to just be unpredictable. Hopefully my next role could be something that most people won't expect from me.”

Below is the video's description on YouTube:

Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys in the Midwest United States between 1978 and 1991 before being captured and incarcerated. He would become one of America’s most infamous serial killers. This is the story before that story.
