Hear what happens next in Neck Deep’s Sonderland with new song “Fall”
On June 17, Neck Deep released their new song "Fall," which offers a further look inside the LP's fictional world of Sonderland and the characters Jett and Alice.
Back in February, Neck Deep announced All Distortions Are Intentional with the release of the single "Lowlife." The new album is a concept album that tells the story of a loner named Jett who lives in a place called Sonderland. Sonderland is a combination of “Wonderland” and the somewhat obscure word “sonder” – meaning the realization of random people living a life as complex as your own with their own ambitions.
“It’s that strange existential realization that you are not the entire world,” singer Ben Barlow says. “Everyone around you feels and lives the same way that you do. You’re just an extra in their story.”
Following "Lowlife," Neck Deep also released the album track "When You Know." They recently shared a social distancing video for the song that features various artists including Silverstein‘s Shane Told, Simple Plan‘s Pierre Bouvier, Alex Costello from ROAM, Derek DiScanio and Ryan Scott Graham from State Champs and more.
Now, Neck Deep are unveiling another new track off of their July album called "Fall." Barlow shares that the new song is about finding ways to escape from reality and release the stress and pressures we often feel.
"'Fall' is a song about excess, release and escape," Barlow says. "Although not a healthy coping mechanism, we can all relate to turning to substances and social situations to liberate us from the internal struggles of life."
As for how "Fall" relates to Sonderland, Barlow further shares that the modern-day love song is about Jett meeting Alice for the first time.
"This song paints a point in which Jett meets his new-found love, Alice for the first time," he continues. "A wild night where love blossoms in the midst of excess and escapism, from the come up to the come down and the realities both of those things bring. It sets us up for a love story full of ups, downs, discoveries and epiphanies."
Along with the song's release, Neck Deep are premiering a music video for "Fall" very soon.
"We'll be premiering the AWESOME new music video tonight at 9pm BST on our Twitch channel," Neck Deep say. "Be there! Shout out to @masshew for the art and @animatethatalbum for making it dance."
The artwork for "Fall" was also created by Neck Deep's Matt West.
For this new album, drummer Dani Abasi has previously said that Neck Deep really pushed the envelope. They ultimately hope that All Distortions Are Intentional will help their music reach a bigger audience worldwide.
“We’re trying to present our sound, as individuals and as a band, in a way that’s palatable to the biggest audience," Abasi says. “That may seem like an obvious idea, but it’s not really. If you view music as a language, you want as many people to understand your language as possible, which isn’t easy. You don’t want to copy anyone else, so you’re taking interesting, original ideas and channeling them into something bigger that brings people into our world.”
UPDATE: JUNE 17, 5:20 P.M. EST
Neck Deep premiered the "Fall" music video during a Twitch livestream. The video features footage from skaters such as Cordano Russell, Bone Stallone, Alex Decunha, Jerrod La Rue, Tommy Corbridge and Roxana Howlett. Alongside footage of the skaters, the band can also be seen skating, biking and enjoying life on tour over the past few years.
Due to the pandemic, Neck Deep faced a number of challenges when it came to executing the "Fall" music video. They ultimately decided to reach out to skaters they thought deserved more recognition for the talent they have. As well, the band went through their footage archive from over the years and included various tour moments in the "Fall" video.
"While we would love to show this love at first sight, COVID-19 has made shooting videos all the more challenging," Barlow shares. "So, we looked at some of the things we love most: fucking around on tour and skateboarding. We decided to reach out to skaters that we have met along our touring journey, that we believe deserve some recognition, and give them a platform to display their amazing talents. We also dug into our archive of tour footage and put it to good use. Giving you an insight into the world of Neck Deep. Expect to get all nostalgic looking back on better days, but also to stoke up some excitement for when things are back to normal. It's all just good-hearted fun, both in the track and in the video and we hope you enjoy listening and watching as much as we and this great bunch of skaters had whilst doing all this crazy shit!"
The "Fall" video is available to stream below.
