New species of shrimp named after Pink Floyd

The rule of nature is, if you discover it, you name it. So if you have a love for rock bands and also happen to be in the science field, you can name a species after your favorite band.

Which is exactly what Sammy de Grave of Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History did when it was time to name a species of pistol shrimp.

De Grave named the shrimp The Synalpheus pinkfloydi after his favorite band, Pink Floyd.

“I have been listening to Floyd since The Wall was released in 1979, when I was 14 years old. I've seen them play live several times since, including the Hyde Park reunion gig for Live 8 in 2005,” he says. “The description of this new species of pistol shrimp was the perfect opportunity to finally give a nod to my favorite band.”

Paired with its pink claw and the super loud sound it makes when snapped, the name was a perfect fit.

This isn't the first time de Grave has named a species after a rock band. He also named one after Mick Jagger.
