10,000 character tweets could be coming to Twitter

An article from Re/Code reports that Twitter could expand its traditional character count from 140 characters to 10,000, which is the current limit of the service’s direct message system. The report cites multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans.

Twitter is reportedly testing a product that will show the usual 140 character tweets on the timeline but will include a call to action to expand and show more text. The goal is to therefore keep timelines looking the same and less convoluted while adding more content, but this all subject to change. The company is also working through different scenarios to deal with potential spam and other issues.

There is no official design, character limit or launch date, but Twitter is apparently aiming for an end of quarter one release. The project is referred to as “Beyond 140” and comes after reports that Twitter was building a product that will allow tweets beyond the 140 limit back in September.

Twitter has been attempting to increase user growth for some time, and this new initiative shows that the social media giant is willing to change some of its core features. Reports came in early December that Twitter may be experimenting with its reverse chronological timeline, another tenant of the service, and try to bump some tweets higher up.
