Due to coronavirus, the film industry has been greatly impacted. For over three months, movie theaters worldwide have been shut down. Now, theaters are planning to reopen this summer. However, many film release dates are being delayed to later this year and 2021. Due to this, the 2021 Oscars are being held at a later date than originally anticipated.
Now, The Academy is sharing when next year’s award ceremony is taking place.
The 2021 Oscars original date was February 28, 2021. To accommodate the delayed film releases and production shutdowns, the ceremony is now happening later than anticipated next year. The 2021 Oscars is now taking place on April 25, 2021.
As well, various dates for other Oscar-related events are changing. The Oscars have extended the eligibility period for next year’s awards. Now, the eligibility period is happening from January 1 to February 28, 2021. This means that films released in January or February are eligible for nominations. Originally, the deadline was January 15, 2021.
Along with this, the shortlist nominations announcement is happening on February 9, 2021. The official nominations announcement is taking place on March 15, 2021. As well, the Academy Museum will open on April 30, 2021.
It's true! Next year's #Oscars will happen on April 25, 2021.

Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson recently spoke to Variety about next year’s Oscars.
“For over a century,” they say. “Movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish. [And] release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control. This coming Oscars will mark a historic moment.”
For specialty category submissions, however, they must be submitted by December 1, 2020. Otherwise, they will not be eligible for nominations. This includes animated feature films, documentary features, international feature features and more. Back in April, The Academy announced that streaming-only films are eligible for 2021 nominations.
