5 Seconds Of Summer drop '80s-inspired synth-pop song “Wildflower”

5 Seconds Of Summer have their new album C A L M dropping this Friday, March 27. If you thought “Old Me” would be the last single before then, boy were you wrong.

The Australian quartet dropped another single titled “Wildflower.” The new track is a catchy, ’80s pop ballad, anchored by an untraditional formula and massive harmonies.

“Wildflower” is the fifth single from 5 Seconds Of Summer’s upcoming record C A L M. Previously, 5SOS dropped “Old Me” as the fourth single from C A L M, having previously dropped “Easier,” “Teeth” and “No Shame.”

“Wildflower” ditches the anthemic, pop-rock sound we’ve come to love from 5 Seconds Of Summer and traded it in for a sweet new 80’s whip. Surprisingly, it’s very similar to the dreamy My Chemical Romance “Helena” reimagining. It’s probably just the synth.

The song’s catchy hook oddly omits certain words to heighten the romantic tension. 5 Seconds Of Summer’s bassist Callum Hood discusses the idea behind it.

“We wanted to make the chorus kind of a choose-your-own-adventure, where some words are left out and then accentuated by these big stabs of synth,” Hood says. “It lets everyone come up with their own interpretation, and fill in whatever they think those missing lyrics might be.”

Coinciding with the track, 5SOS also dropped a stop-motion lyric video that took over 18 hours to make, featured 358 different photos and 529 flowers. It’s just the ray of sunshine we all need during this coronavirus quarantine.

“Wildflower” Lyrics

I hear you calling out my name
I love the sound
I love the taste
And I can see it in your face
You got a side
You can’t explain

You’re tellin’ me, tellin’ me, tellin’ me
You wanna come over
That you wanna be, wanna be, wanna be
Wanna be closer
I love it when you wear your hair down over your shoulder
‘Cause I wanna hold ya
’Cause I know where tonight is going

You’re the only one who makes me
Every time we
Tell you what I like
My wildflower

You’re the only one who makes me
Every time we
Tell you what I like
My wildflower

You know you are
My favorite fantasy
A fatal love song

You’re the only one who makes me
Every time we
Tell you what I like
My wildflower

I see the color in your veins
It makes me smile
It makes me shake
I see the shadow in my brain
And I like its look
And I like its shape

You’re tellin’ me, tellin’ me, tellin’ me
You wanna come over
That you wanna be, wanna be, wanna be
Wanna be closer
I love it when you wear your hair down over your shoulder
‘Cause I wanna hold ya
’Cause I know where tonight is going
