5SOS search for the Chainsmokers in bleak teaser clip

In a desolate but vivid new spot that recalls a scene from the original Star Trek series or perhaps Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, it appears that 5 Seconds of Summer are seeking out the Chainsmokers via Amazon Music.

“Who do you love?” is the ominous tag plastered alongside the bizarre clip, shared Monday (Feb. 4) via 5 Seconds Of Summer’s official Twitter. In it, phone hoisted to the sky, the “Lie To Me” rockers request Alexa‘s assistance. Watch below.

“Alexa, follow the Chainsmokers on Amazon Music,” it looks like the band’s Ashton Irwin implores to the device held aloft. The query follows the 5 Seconds Of Summer members’ dramatic amble into the austere desert environment.

“Sure, you’re now following the Chainsmokers,” Alexa responds, its eerily synthesized computer voice leaning fully into the uncanny valley. Gusts of distorted wind are heard billowing through the video’s bleak, digitized landscape.

But what does it mean? It’s for sure some sort of ad for Amazon Alexa—but does it hint at an upcoming collab among 5SOS and the Chainsmokers? Or did the group really just want to share their Alexa request for the Halsey-backed hitmakers?

Well, it’s all part of a “double-tease from [t]he Chainsmokers and power pop-punkers 5 Seconds of Summer for what appears to be a new tune called ‘Who Do You Love?'” Billboard reports, citing the Chainsmokers’ own clip teasing a team-up.

And, it wouldn’t be the first time the two acts have been seen around each other. Last year, both 5 Seconds Of Summer and the Chainsmokers performed at the KDWB Jingle Ball in Minnesota, as reviewed by the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.
