5 Seconds Of Summer tell it like it is: "We can do whatever the f*ck we want with our music"

Former AP cover stars 5 Seconds Of Summer sat down with AP contributor Maria Sherman Twitter for our latest issue to talk about an array of topics, including their sound as a whole. “I do not give a damn about [the] limitations [anyone] puts on this band,” says a candid Ashton Irwin. “I look at this band and I see three other dudes who are just as committed and ambitious as I am and we can do whatever the fuck we want with our music.”

“‘Boy band’ and ‘pop-punk’ have the same boundaries. I hate when people call us pop-punk sometimes, because we can do more than that,” Irwin says. “People shouldn’t limit themselves. That’s the issue with this world: putting barriers on what you’re capable of. You’re capable of fucking anything. That sounds like a super-Bono thing to say, but you can fucking do it. It we can claw our asses out of nowhere in Sydney and become the band that we’re today, you can do anything. I do not give a damn about [the] limitations [anyone] puts on this band. I look at this band and I see three other dudes who are just as committed and ambitious as I am and we can do whatever the fuck we want with our music. ‘That’s not pop-punk.’ ‘You’re a boy band.’ I could not give a fuck. If we lived our life worrying about what other people thought, we wouldn’t be doing this.”
