A Day To Remember reveal how Kacey Musgraves inspired “Degenerates"

A Day To Remember singer Jeremy McKinnon has opened up about the band’s upcoming album and what fans can expect it to sound like.

In case you haven’t noticed, ADTR have been busy lately, after dropping a single, signing to a new record label, and announcing the details of their upcoming album at a live show.

The band dropped “Degenerates” recently, their first track in three years besides their collab “Rescue Me” with Marshmello earlier this summer. It was also the first release with their new label, Fueled By Ramen.

Then, A Day To Remember played a free show at House of Vans London ahead of their Reading and Leeds set.

Earlier that morning, a photo of a poster surfaced on Twitter with the words “YOU’RE WELCOME” and “A Day To Remember.”

A similar image also appeared on Chorus.FM that states the album title will be “You’re Welcome.”

McKinnon revealed the news during the band’s gig right before playing the brand new track.

“That song is going to come out on a record later this year,” McKinnon says in a video from RockSound. “That’s with our friends in Fueled By Ramen. Let’s hear it for Fueled By Ramen! It’s gonna come out on that label, and we’re gonna call that record ‘You’re Welcome’.”

Now, McKinnon is sharing even more information about the upcoming album, saying its the “happiest record that we’ve ever written.”

“The mood in the camp is positive,” he told NME. “I think that shows in the songs too. It kind of feels like the happiest record that we’ve written in a minute – or ever. It’s definitely the happiest record we wrote to date. That’s definitely exciting for me. The name of the game this time was collaboration. You know, getting in a room together, getting in a room with people who inspire us, seeing what comes out.”

He added that there are “hints” of darkness “everywhere” but said as a whole, the album is pretty positive. McKinnon said the band had some unusual inspiration for the new song “Degenerates,” including country star Kacey Musgraves.

“(She) has got this song called ‘Space Cowboy’. I love how you’ve seen the title of the song, you think you know what she’s talking about, then that chorus hits and it’s a completely different subject and meaning than what you thought the song was going to be about,” he said.

“I thought that was just the coolest thing, and that really inspired me lyrically to ask, ‘How can I take this subject and just flip it on its head?’ If you really listen to the lyrics in ‘Degenerates’, it completely flips the meaning of the song,” he continued. “It’s about what other people assume by looking at someone. That’s where the line ‘dividing all the books by their covers‘ comes from. It’s about judging others by the way they look, rather than on their merits.”
