Aaron Paul says he thought it "could be interesting" portraying Kurt Cobain

Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul was in the midst of a worldwide press tour for his upcoming role in HBO‘s Westworld which was abruptly shut down due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic which he’s opening up about in a new interview.

While speaking with NME, Paul reveals how things have been changing for him as well as talking about how he wanted to play the role of Nirvana‘s Kurt Cobain at one time.

While speaking on how promotion for his new role is shifting currently, the actor discusses the plans they had in place which have now been canceled.

“It’s an….interesting time we’re in,” says Paul. “I was supposed to do a worldwide press tour for Westworld, and we were supposed to have a Brazil premiere, a big activation at South by Southwest festival and I was supposed to do some press and talk shows in New York – all that stuff was cancelled. Slowly but surely, every production is being shut down, which I think is the responsible thing to – just to try to stop this thing from spreading.”

Touching on how Breaking Bad became a much-discussed show among musicians, Paul says it felt like every band was watching. He also offers a story about how the Rolling Stones brought him to a show.

“Oh man, I gotta be honest, it just felt like Breaking Bad was on everyone’s tour bus. So it really felt like it was a big thing in the music industry,” says Paul. “The most surreal thing was I got invited to a Rolling Stones concert out of nowhere as their guest. Ronnie Wood wanted to meet up with me so I went backstage and met him in his dressing room, and he introduced me to Keith Richards – Keith was shirtless, smoking a joint and exactly as you’d imagine him. It felt like such a rock star moment. But it happened because they were massive fans of Breaking Bad – that’s crazy.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he discusses his love for music revealing he would love to write but jokingly says “trust me, no-one wants to listen to that!”

Paul once portrayed Weird Al Yankovic in a Funny Or Die spoof trailer for a biopic long before music biopics became as common as they are now. He says there is one musician he would like to portray on screen for real though – Kurt Cobain.

“When I first moved to LA, I thought quite a bit about Kurt Cobain and what happened and I just love Nirvana – ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was one of the first records I bought with my own money, so I’ve thought that could be interesting [to play Cobain].”
