Earlier this month, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was hospitalized following shortness of breath after a surprise performance with Billy Joel. Initially, a press release stated it was believed Perry would recover in time for his U.S. fall tour.

However, the guitarist is now announcing he’ll be unable to continue with touring plans per his doctor’s recommendation.

Last night, the musician broke the news on his Instagram account:

“Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the kind messages I’ve received this week. I’m home and doing well, but the doctor recommends a bit more downtime before getting out to rock again, so regrettable I had to cancel my upcoming tour dates. Was really looking forward to playing these shows with Brad and Gary and seeing all of you who were planning to come out and support us. We will be back out as soon as possible. Wishing you all Happy Holidays and looking forward to seeing in 2019.”

Joe Perry hospitalization

Perry was taken to the hospital after reportedly collapsing in his dressing room following an appearance at a Billy Joel concert Nov. 10. Perry surprised audiences after showing up during Joel’s Madison Square Garden concert Saturday, and performing “Walk This Way” with Joel and his band.

According to TMZ, Perry collapsed in his dressing room shortly after the performance. Paramedics reportedly attended to the musician for 40 minutes, including “placing a tracheal tube down his throat to clear the air path.” He was then taken from the venue and rushed to a New York hospital.

Perry remained in the hospital Nov. 11 where it was reported he was alert and responsive. A statement was released soon after, where it was initially believed he would be able to continue the tour:

“Following a guest performance during Billy Joel’s show last night at Madison Square Garden, Joe Perry experienced shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to a hospital. This morning, Perry remains in the hospital where he is alert and responsive. The Aerosmith guitarist will be unable to appear today at Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp in Florida and apologizes to those attending. Perry is expected to return to the road later this month.”
