Altars claim "Bigot" is not about Reformers, homosexuality or Christianity

Earlier this week, Altars seemingly burst forth from the grave with a new track and EP announcement. The track, titled “Bigot,” almost immediately came under fire as some proposed that it was a rebuttle against Reformers' song, “Abomination.”

Earlier this morning, however, Altars posted an official statement to their Facebook page on the meaning behind the track. In short, they claimed, “”Bigot” is not about Reformers. “Bigot” is not about homosexuality. “Bigot” is not about Christianity. “Bigot” is a vocal and musical opposition to the way many religious and self-proclaimed spiritual people view their own beliefs versus the beliefs of others.”

You can read the full statement below. Be sure to leave us a comment with your thoughts.

Regarding the overwhelmingly heartwarming / open minded reaction to our new track ‘Bigot’:

We quoted the lyrics of a Reformers song as a solitary example of something that many people practice and represent. We know that they are good guys just doing what they love, but it must be realized that when art that carries a message is created and released, one might expect that the message is automatically subject to critique and conversation. Is that not the purpose of art itself? Altars recognizes that our feelings and ideas are equally subject to criticism; the response to the release of this track should make this fact obvious.

The song ‘Bigot’ does not intend to call out the band whose lyrics happen to represent an approach that Altars as a band stands against. Bigot is not about Reformers. Bigot is not about homosexuality. Bigot is not about Christianity. Bigot is a vocal and musical opposition to the way many religious and self-proclaimed spiritual people view their own beliefs versus the beliefs of others. We will not apologize for believing that individually held and proclaimed “truth” isn’t necessarily universal truth. Our band will continue to ask hard questions and will always challenge the status quo. If this doesn’t fit the spiritual mold that our friends and listeners have presumed for our band, save yourself some trouble and ignore the five yet-to-be-released tracks from the EP, they are likely to be equally as off-putting to many of you. And to clarify, we love everyone at Facedown Records with our whole hearts, but this EP will be released independently of any label.
