Amazon reportedly fulfilling orders with counterfeit CDs, study finds

Amazon and other major online retailers might be braking a few hearts. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has some shocking news. They suggest that around 25% of all CDs fulfilled by Amazon are counterfeit.

The RIAA represents major labels Universal Music, Warner Music, Sony Music and is responsible for those Gold and Platinum Record standards. They conducted a study into the fulfillment and direct selling habits of Amazon.

“We also conducted a study making tests buys on Amazon and eBay of a broad sample of current and evergreen album titles released by major U.S. record labels. All of the purchases were for “new” or “brand new” listings from the 2 lowest priced listings for the titles in question” RIAA reports.

“The CDs that were shipped to us were then examined to see if they were authentic or counterfeit. The study showed that 16% of the CDs purchased via eBay were counterfeit, and 11% of the CDs purchased via Amazon were counterfeit. Alarmingly, 25% of the purchased CDs that were “Fulfilled by Amazon” were counterfeit.”

The fulfillment process of Amazon allows third-party sellers such as small businesses or individuals to gain access to Amazon’s customer base. The seller provides the merchandise to Amazon, and Amazon covers the shipping and customer-service responsibility from there.

As you read, it’s not just Amazon either as eBay is majorly at fault as well. RIAA also conducted a study into box sets as well as individual CDs and the results are even worse. They found that 100% of all CD box sets they purchased through eBay or AliExpress were counterfeit.

The RIAA continues in its report a plan detailing a way to reduce and eventually cease all counterfeit sales. The group also harps on the importance of their work and the negligence and harm that counterfeiters commit.

“Nearly 85% of all legitimate recorded music produced and sold in the United States is created, manufactured or distributed by RIAA members.” The report states. “In support of its mission, the RIAA works to protect the intellectual property and First Amendment rights of artists and music labels.
