AMC Theaters and MoviePass will be testing a new subscription service, where you can see one movie a day for $35 a month ($45 for IMAX and RealD), according to the Denver Post. (That price actually sounds reasonable?) The companies will be testing the service first in Denver and Boston. More cities will be added later.
For subscription movie watching at home, we’ve got Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and others. But this seems like the only option for an in-theater experience via subscription.
“It frankly wouldn’t be smart to ignore the success of subscription in other areas of media,” said Christina Sternberg, a senior vice president at AMC, the No. 2 theater chain in the U.S. “The data will determine how fast we go. Sometimes you first expand the test, sometimes you accelerate the deployment.”
The company is worried about a recent decline in younger viewers. The New York Times reports, “The Nielsen Company said last week that the moviegoing of Americans age 12 to 24 dropped 15 percent in the first nine months of 2014, compared with the same period a year earlier.”
