‘American Horror Story’ favorite reportedly not starring in ‘1984’

American Horror Story fans were crushed when the news broke that Evan Peters would be sitting out season 9 (but it might not be his last). Those who were hoping for Sarah Paulson to maintain the throne for starring in every season may want to sit down.

Paulson appeared in debut season Murder House in 2011 in a small role as psychic Billie Dean Howard. The following season, she took center stage as journalist Lana Winters in Asylum. Since then, the actress maintained star power, but it looks like she’ll be taking a step back in season 9.

According to sources, Paulson will not be starring in upcoming season 9, which is titled 1984, Variety reports. The site describes her involvement (or lack of) as “not appear[ing] in a significant role” but that she may have a cameo.

As stated, Murder House is the least amount of episodes Paulson has appeared in at three. Following her role as Winters in Asylum, Paulson appeared as Cordelia Foxx in Coven, Siamese twins Bette and Dot Tattler in Freak Show, Sally McKenna in Hotel, actress Audrey Tindall in Roanoke and Ally Mayfair-Richards in Cult. In latest Apocolypse, Paulson embodied new role Wilhemina Venable and reprised several others from her time with the series.

Variety reports both 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the series, and Paulson’s reps declined to comment.

Paulson has scored five Emmy nominations for her work with the series. Among them were Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Asylum, Freak Show and Hotel. She also was nominated in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Coven and Cult.

While Paulson may or may not be working with AHS creator Ryan Murphy on 1984, the duo do have something else in the works for Netflix. Paulson is starring in an origin story adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest where she portrays Nurse Ratched. The series also features fellow AHS alum Finn Wittrock (Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke). No information on a release date has been made available.

American Horror Story: 1984 recently revealed it will be airing Sept. 18. With little information about the plot available, you can check out the glimpse of what to expect from the only teaser below.

More on American Horror Story: 1984

Earlier this year, there was talk about bringing back more fan favorites, and two cast members were revealed. However, Murphy’s casting choices for the then unnamed season caused a bit of backlash.

On Instagram, Murphy revealed Gus Kenworthy joined the cast as Emma Roberts’ boyfriend in roles that still have details pending.

“That special moment when you realize you have an Olympic medal AND will be playing Emma Roberts’ boyfriend on American Horror Story Season 9,” Murphy wrote.

Roberts made her AHS debut as Madison Montgomery in Coven in 2013. She returned in a new role in Freak Show in 2014 and made a one-episode appearance in 2017’s Cult. Most recently, she reprised the infamous Coven role for 2018’s Apocalypse.

Kenworthy is known as a talented athlete, having won a silver medal in Men’s freestyle skiing at the 2014 Olympic games. Following his win, the skier publicly came out in an ESPN tell-all, which was published in Oct. 2015. Fans immediately accused Murphy of only hiring Kenworthy for his sexuality.

They cited that to date, Kenworthy has appeared as himself in documentaries and reality shows such as MTV’s The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, Top Chef and TBS’ Drop The Mic and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

He has two acting credits, but both are as himself or a skier in ABC’s The Real O’Neals and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming respectively.
