‘American Horror Story: 1984’ announces premiere date

Believe it or not, American Horror Story is gearing up for its ninth season this year. We’ve made it through Murder House, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke and so many more.

Details have been rather scarce on the upcoming season, but creator Ryan Murphy finally revealed its title, American Horror Story: 1984, in April. Now we finally know when the first episode will air.

In April, Murphy took to Instagram to declare a simple, “AHS SEASON 9 is called…” With it, he shared a short teaser video with that famous eerie music as a man (or monster?) stalks a woman through the woods.

Given the woman’s throwback attire, the title card of AHS: 1984 makes total sense, and so does the slasher film-esque vibe present throughout the clip. The ending slide reveals the season is headed to our screens this fall, and now we have exact date.

Today, the series took to Instagram to reveal American Horror Story: 1984 hits our screens Sept. 18 at 10 p.m. You can see their post below.

More on American Horror Story season 9

Earlier this year, there was talk about bringing back more fan favorites, and two cast members were revealed. However, Murphy’s casting choices for the then unnamed season caused a bit of backlash.

Murphy took to Instagram to reveal Gus Kenworthy would be joining the cast to play Emma Roberts’ boyfriend in roles that still have details pending.

“That special moment when you realize you have an Olympic medal AND will be playing Emma Roberts’ boyfriend on American Horror Story Season 9,” Murphy wrote.

Kenworthy reposted it with, “I guess the cat’s out of the bag… I’m. So. Fucking. Shook. ILYSM @mrrpmurphy”

Roberts made her AHS debut as Madison Montgomery in Coven in 2013. She returned in a new role in Freak Show in 2014 and made a one-episode appearance in 2017’s Cult. Most recently, she reprised the infamous Coven role for 2018’s Apocalypse.

Kenworthy is known as a talented athlete, having won a silver medal in Men’s freestyle skiing at the 2014 Olympic games. Following his win, the skier publicly came out in an ESPN tell-all, which was published in Oct. 2015. Fans immediately accused Murphy of only hiring Kenworthy for his sexuality.

They cited that to date, Kenworthy has appeared as himself in documentaries and reality shows such as MTV’s The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, Top Chef and TBS’ Drop The Mic and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

He has two acting credits, but both are as himself or a skier in ABC’s The Real O’Neals and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming respectively.

Evan Peters’ American Horror Story future

While we know Roberts and Kenworthy are joining the cast, one AHS mainstay has stated he will not be returning. Evan Peters recently made a surprising remark concerning his future on American Horror Story going forward.

Peters was asked about his involvement on the popular FX series at WonderCon. The prompt lead to a less-than-satisfying answer about his role in the new season.

“No, I’m going to sit a season out,” Peters says.

If true, this would be the first time in the show’s history that the actor wouldn’t be present, having been with the series since 2011’s debut, Murder House. A video of the comment was revealed on Twitter yesterday from the Extra producer who interviewed Peters.

“Here is the video where Evan Peters told me he will not be returning to American Horror Story. This is the first time in nine seasons he will not be part of the show! #AHS,” the tweet reads.

Peters’ comment correlates with an interview he had with GQ last year, where he says he isn’t interested in portraying the dark roles that he’s become accustomed to and its affecting his emotional health.

“Yeah, I’m not doing it anymore,” Peters says. “I just made a decision. I said to myself, ‘I can’t do it anymore.’ It’s not me. It’s not who I am.”

Peters clarified his comments in a later interview with GQ Style, describing them as a result of being overworked and tired.

“I think it was a full-on burnout,” he says. “I’m going to take a break, regroup, decompress, get back in touch with what I feel like I want to do. Not that I didn’t want to do any of those roles—they’re exactly what I wanted to do.”

However, Peters recently revealed that he hasn’t entirely ruled out a return to the series. When asking if he’d consider making a return, he replied:

“Yeah, absolutely, never say never. I just… Yeah, we’ll see what happens.”

With Peters announcing his departure from season 9, only Sarah Paulson will have been with the show for all eight seasons thus far. PopBuzz reports that she will return for the next installment.
