‘American Horror Story’ fan-favorite confirms season 10 return

American Horror Story fans, get stoked. The beloved FX show has secured an additional three seasons, renewing through season 13. As if that isn’t exciting enough, we finally know some details on a fan-favorite returning in season 10.

It all went down at the Television Critics Association’s press panel Thursday where FX Prods. and FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf confirmed American Horror Story is renewed through season 13. Speaking at the same event, Sarah Paulson revealed she’ll be returning in season 10, which had already been confirmed for renewal ahead of season 8, American Horror Story: Apocalypse, premiering in September 2018.

The horror show just wrapped its ninth season, American Horror Story: 1984, in November. It marked the first season without regulars Paulson and Evan Peters who had appeared in some capacity since the show’s 2011 debut, Murder House. Now, it looks like at least one of them will be returning, according to The Wrap.

“I can confirm that I will be in next season,” Paulson says. “I have no idea what it will be… But I’m not coming back as a guest part, I will be a central character.”

With news of the newly confirmed seasons, The Wrap asked the star if she’ll be returning for those as well.

“God willing, I have no idea,” she said. “But I do know that I did ask Ryan [Murphy] if the question was asked to me, could I say that I was coming back and he said, ‘Yes, you can say.’ So yes, I will be back on American Horror Story.”

Prior to Paulson’s big announcement, Landgraf spoke highly of creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk while confirming seasons 11 through 13.

“Ryan and Brad are the undisputed masters of horror TV, having created the anthological limited series with American Horror Story and sustaining its success for nearly a decade as FX’s highest-rated series,” Landgraf says according to Variety. “We are grateful to them and Dana Walden and our studio partners for committing to another three years.

American Horror Story has showcased a wealth of award-winning actors since day one and we appreciate the contributions of everyone, including Ryan, Brad and fellow executive producers Tim Minear, James Wong, Alexis Martin Woodall and Bradley Buecker; the writers; directors; cast and crew for each new, unforgettable installment of American Horror Story.”

Like Paulson, Landgraf continues by saying he hasn’t been told what the additional three seasons will focus on, but 13 feels like the perfect number of seasons for the horror show.

“I think we’re really fortunate that he still loves it because he has so many things on his plate,” Landgraf says. “He surprises me by telling me what it’s going to be. Somehow it feels really poetic to me that American Horror Story is going to have 13 seasons; that just felt right.”

American Horror Story shared the renewal news on Twitter with the most on-brand reaction, “We aren’t done with you yet.”

More on American Horror Story

While Landgraf might not know what’s ahead for the newly added three seasons, creator Ryan Murphy has been teasing what we can expect for the already confirmed season 10.

In November, Murphy revealed in an interview with Deadline that 1984’s finale made him cry as well as cast details for next season, what the series’ future will be and more.

Touching on where season 10 will take place, he couldn’t reveal a lot but gave some hints at his writing process.

“Every season by Halloween, I come up with what the winner [theme] is, and I already came up with an idea for season 10,” Murphy says. “There’s always the runner-ups, and I’m like ‘Hmm could this be something?’ We flirted with aliens, we flirted with space, we flirted with some things that were more interesting than others. I think that at the heart of it, it’s always about Americana.”

At the time, AHS hadn’t been renewed past season 10, so Murphy was planning as if it would be their last, recruiting fan-favorite actors to return, which we now know will include Paulson.

“We’re working on an idea for season 10 that I think people will love because it’s about reuniting fan-favorite actors to come back — because it might be our last season,” he says. “It’s the last season we have contracted. So, I’ve been quietly reaching out to various people. Some people I haven’t reached out to yet because I was like ‘Do I have a role for them?’ So far, everybody I reached out to said ‘Yes’, so that’s been great.”

When asked about specific actors, he couldn’t give anything away but gave a hefty hint.

“Too soon to tell, but I’ll just sort of say, the people who helped build this show into what it is, who believed in it from the beginning, have been contacted and are interested. So if you look at the iconography of the first three seasons, you can figure who I’ve gone to and who might be coming back.”

With Paulson confirmed, there’s hope yet for Evan Peters or Jessica Lange. Peters confirmed he was taking time off from AHS in April 2019 but followed it up with “never say never” when questioned about a return the following month.

Lange has stated she’s done with AHS after reprising her Murder House role in 2018’s Apocalypse. However, we do know Murphy teased another return for the Coven cast while discussing that Apocalypse return. At the time, he stated it wouldn’t be season 9, so who knows what’s brewing for season 10.
