See members of Run-DMC, Anthrax and more team up for charity medley

This week, members of Run-DMC, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies and Volbeat have teamed up to give back to Music Unites.

In a new video posted on June 15, Anthrax’s Charlie Benante has crafted a Run-DMC medley with Darryl “DMC” McDaniels on vocals. Alongside them, former Anthrax member Rob Caggiano (now of Volbeat) and Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz also took part in the medley.

Music Unites is a leading non-profit organization supporting music education around the world. To help give back to this organization, Benante, McDaniels, Caggiano and Diaz have teamed up for an iconic Run-DMC medley.

The medley is something that Benante has wanted to do for a while.

“I always wanted to do a medley of Run-DMC songs,” he shares. “So back in March I decided to put an arrangement together and asked these amazing people to be a part of it.”

When it came time to putting the medley together, Benante knew that he needed to have McDaniels included in it. Benante has been a Run-DMC fan for many years.

“How can you do a Run-DMC medley without the KING of ROCK Darryl McDaniels DMC,” he continues. “I have been a Run-DMC fan from back when I first heard ‘It’s Like That‘ [and] ‘Sucker MCs.‘ They had my attention immediately!”

Benante also says that Anthrax’s song “I’m The Man” was heavily inspired by both Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys.

“It’s no secret that our ‘I’m the Man’ song was inspired by Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys,” he reveals. “That’s how much we loved them.”

Once McDaniels was onboard for the medley, Benante enlisted the help of both Diaz and Caggiano to bring style and musicianship to the performance.

“I asked Ra once again because he has the groove and creativity to adapt to any song,” he says. “He placed a familiar line at the end of the song that just fit so well. I asked Rob Caggiano because I always loved his style [and] love the way he attacks his guitar and plays the tastiest shit. He throws this great black metal riff in here that raises the tune to another level.”

Above all, each member decided to use this medley to give back to charity. Each of them hopes that this performance moves whoever listens to it and inspires them to get more involved in music.

“We all came together to create this piece of music that makes us move,” Benante shares. “I hope it makes you move! Maybe it inspires you to make music, play your instrument, write lyrics…”
