Anti-Piracy "Six Strikes System" going into effect this week

A long-talked-about but never enacted (until yesterday) anti-piracy movement has begun. The Copyright Alert System (CAS)–or what is popularly being called the “six strikes” system–will see Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon, issuing “strikes” to users they believe are engaging in illegal  downloading.

The Huffington Post reports, “Critics have called the system “six strikes” because the sixth copyright violation is expected to lead to punishment from the Internet providers.” Said punishment is expected to either be a slowing of their internet or a complete shut-down.

The Center For Copyright Information, which is heading the system says, “Consumers whose accounts have been used to share copyrighted content over P2P networks illegally (or without authority) will receive Alerts that are meant to educate rather than punish, and direct them to legal alternatives.”

What do you think of this new system? Do you think its an effective tool in the ever-ongoing online piracy battle?
