In 2017, Apple discontinued the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle, the last two models devoted solely to playing music. The total discontinuation of the iPod may seem like the end of an era, but companies such as Astell & Kern and COWON are carrying on the legacy of the portable music player.

In an Apple news post, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak commented on how the iPod features users grew to love will live on in their other products.

“Today, the spirit of iPod lives on,” he says. “We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad and Apple TV.”
