Apple Music overtakes Spotify in number of paid U.S. subscribers

It looks like Spotify is no longer king of the music streaming game. According to a report from Reuters, Apple Music has officially surpassed Spotify in terms of number of paid monthly subscribers in the U.S.

But don’t count Spotify out just yet.

At the end of Feb., Apple had a total of 28 million paid U.S. subscribers while their rival Spotify came up short with 26 million.

However, when it comes to total U.S. listeners, Spotify still holds the top spot largely due to their option for listeners to use an ad-supported free version of the app.

According to the report, analysts believe Spotify still has a stronger overall subscription position compared to Apple Music.

Back in Feb., Spotify reported a total of 96 million premium subscribers and 207 million monthly active users.

Apple Music does not regularly disclose their total number of subscribers, with the last “official” count coming in at 50 million back in May 2018.

Spotify pranks users with bizarre playlist

The streaming giants duped us all by taking part in an April Fool’s Day prank that confused the hell out of all of us.

If users attempted to listen to their “Discover Weekly” playlist on Monday, which usually suggests songs based on their listening patterns, they were probably a bit confused when the entire playlist was full of disco cover songs.

“We made you a mix of disco covers and covers of disco, but you can always boogie on over to your regular Discover Weekly. April Fools!” the description reads.

Songs on the playlist include the Riverdale casts’ rendition of “I Feel The Love,” Demi Lovato’s cover of “I Will Survive” and Lizzo’s cover of “Stayin’ Alive” from Happy Death Day 2U.
