'Aquaman' is getting a horror movie spin-off titled 'The Trench'

In a very weird turn of events, it looks like Aquaman will be getting its own spin-off in the form of a horror movie titled The Trench.

Well we never saw this one coming.

The film is set to focus on the creepy Lovecraftian Trench monsters revealed in the Aquaman film.

James Wan, who produced the DC blockbuster, is also set to produce this horror movie spin-off which is already set at a MUCH lower budget than its OG film.

The book The Art and Making Of Aquaman describes these scary fish-monsters:

“The Trench were just any other Atlanteans before the Great Fall. After Atlantis and its various people migrated to different locations, the Trench mutated and adapted to their surroundings in the deepest, darkest point of the ocean: the Mariana Trench. Over thousands of years, they devolved into primal, sharp-clawed monsters with exposed gills and an aversion to light.”

Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald are set to write the script while Wan and Peter Safran will produce the movie.

“We created an animatic version of that scene and showed the studio,” Safran adds in the book. “And it harkened back to James Wan’s pure horror days. It’s like Creature from the Black Lagoon, but the 2018 version. It’s pure horror, it’s fantastic, and I think it’s one of the things that really got the green light for the movie.”

Before you go getting your hopes up, I’m here to burst your bubble that Jason Momoa will NOT be in the spin-off.

THR states, “details of the take are being kept submerged but it will be set in the kingdom of the Trench and will not feature the main cast of Aquaman.”

Bummer.

Still, we’re excited to see how this horror film turns out, and in case you need a refresher on these terrifying fish-creatures:
