Tom Gabel to release solo EP

Tom Gabel, oft-politicized frontman for Against Me!, has posted a week’s worth of studio entries on his blog chronicling the recording of a solo EP for AM!’s label, Sire Records.

The EP is being tracked with Butch Vig and Billy Bush, who produced and engineered New Wave, respectively.

The record is titled Heart Burns, with song titles including "100 Years Of War," "Anna Is A Stool Pigeon," "Conceptual Paths," "Cowards Sing At Night" (apparently regarding Republican Presidential nominee John McCain), "Harsh Realms" and "Random Hearts." Gabel also talks about "I Can’t See You, But I Know You’re There," but mentions it may not make the final cut.

Guests on the record include, in the least, Chuck Ragan ("Anna Is A Stool Pigeon"), and Matt Skiba on gang vocals for an unspecified track.

Gabel said regarding the session:

"Recording for the past 11 days has been a positive and fulfilling experience. It’s made all those nights this past year when I’ve chosen to go back to my hotel room, or back to the bus, and write instead of going out and partying, worth it. I feel energized, excited about making music and writing."

Gabel also shot videos for each of the EP’s tracks with photographer Jason Thrasher.

Adds Gabel:

"It was pretty awesome standing on a rooftop in downtown Los Angeles, singing at the top of my lungs to the endlessly expanding city below, as the sun slowly set. As we sat huddled in the dark watching the playback on the camera, laughing, talking, drinking beers, I felt like I was 19 again. Life was dangerous and exciting. All ideas were possible and should be followed with passion. The future was unpredictable. I want to always feel that way."

The sessions also included a cover of the Replacements’ "Here Comes A Regular," which will appear on a 50th anniversary compilation due out on Warner Bros. Records. Funny enough, Paul Westerberg, who fronted the band (long considered a primary influence on Against Me!), went onto a considerably lengthy and successful solo career himself.

Gabel did not reveal any possible release dates for the EP.
