Sunny Day Real Estate announce reunion tour
It’s been rumored for months now, but legendary emo outfit Sunny Day Real Estate have made it official: All four original members will reunite for a 20-date U.S. tour this fall. In addition, Sub Pop Records will re-issue the band’s first two full-lengths–1994’s Diary and 1995’s LP2 (often referred to as "The Pink Album")–each with bonus tracks and newly written liner notes. Both CDs will be released on Sept. 15.
Sunny Day Real Estate have been on hiatus for the past decade after internal tension caused a rift, leaving members to pursue other ventures. Frontman Jeremy Enigk, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith resurfaced with the Fire Theft, who released their self-titled full-length in 2003. Enigk also released several solo albums, while both Mendel and Goldsmith joined up with Foo Fighters. (Mendel is still a Fighter of Foo.) Guitarist Dan Hoerner went on to collaborate with Chris Carrabba on Dashboard Confessional’s 2001 EP, So Impossible.
Mendel had this to say about the reunion:
"“I wasn’t around for the second version of the band that recorded the 3rd and 4th albums, so I’ve always had a feeling of unfinished business there. We had all these outsized ideas back then, ‘Everyone’s going to learn a new instrument,’ and ‘Let’s do a rock opera,’ but before we could get anywhere with them, the band broke up. We left behind all these weird and beautiful songs, though, and they’ve stuck with me all this time. I’m really happy that we get a chance to play them together again.”
