Green Day wins, Kanye loses it at the VMAs

Despite Kanye West's best efforts to derail it, the 2009 MTV VMAs went down Sunday night in New York City. British comedian Russell Brand hosted the affair.

The event kicked off with Madonna delivering a eulogy for the late Michael Jackson before a musical tribute to the late pop star. The highlight (or lowlight) of the night occured when country starlet Taylor Swift began her acceptance speech for "Best Female Video." Rapper Kanye West jumped onstage, grabbed the microphone from Swift and proclaimed that Beyonce deserved the award instead. West was reportedly escorted from the venue and later in the evening, as Beyonce began her speech for winning "Video Of The Year," she invited Swift onstage to finish her acceptance.

Green Day were winners for "Best Rock Video," beating out Fall Out Boy and Paramore. Green Day's clip for "21 Guns" also took home "Best Direction" and "Best Cinematography." 3OH!3 were defeated by Lady Gaga in the "Best New Artist" category, and Cobra Starship were outgunned by Britney Spears in the "Best Pop Video" category. Green Day and Muse performed along with the likes of Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and more.
