Along with the album drop, Grande released a video for “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored.” The video is basically about Grande wanting to get with a guy who is taken at a party.
The end of the video shows the singer about to kiss the said girlfriend in the video, who looks a lot like her. She flirts with the woman several times in the video.
People have been calling out Grande, accusing her of “queerbaiting” and exploiting the LGBT community for her personal profit.
Grande has never self-identified as LGBT, but has been a huge supporter of LGBT people. She penned a note to the community for Billboard last Pride month. Grande acknowledged that the LGBT community is a huge supporter of her music. She also mentions her close relationship with her brother, Frankie Grande, who is openly gay.
However, many people on Twitter believe the video is more of a stunt for shock value than doing anything to support the LGBT community.
See what they said below.
#ArianaGrande is queerbaiting & using the aesthetic of LGBT intimacy for no reason other than shock value/clicks. Trying to justify it as “representing self-love” is disrespectful to ACTUAL WLW- they don’t have the privilege to benefit while also avoiding the stigma/oppression. pic.twitter.com/XDZ0wZvxB9

her “break up with your girlfriend” song is trash. she’s not fucking gay and i’m sick of her wearing everything like an accessory. first black culture and now lgbt

i hope that ariana grande is gay or bi because if she isn’t and she is just another straight rich singer profiting off of lgbt women, then she’s just homophobic. #ArianaGrande #BreakUpWithYourGirlfriendImBored
