Sleeping With Sirens guitarist points out Ariana Grande, Gotye similarity

Sleeping With Sirens guitarist Nick Martin has suggested that Ariana Grande’s song “Bad Idea” sounds very similar to Gotye’s 2011 hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

Apparently, the beat in Grande’s Thank U, Next track may be the culprit behind many people’s speculations.

“Has it been said yet that Ariana Grande’s melodies in “Bad Idea” are similar sounding to Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,”” Martin says in a tweet. “Not knockin’ it. Just wondering if anyone else hears it at all. Maybe it’s just me.”

However, Martin is not the only one that is skeptical of the song’s influence. In fact, many people believe that Grande may have ripped off the Australian electro-pop artist.

Listen to the two tracks below and decide for yourself.

While it seems most people believe Grande is simply paying homage to the bop, this would not be the first time Grande has been called out for taking beats.

A few weeks ago, Grande was accused of ripping off Princess Nokia’s “Mine.”

Additionally, Princess Nokia claimed that Grande’s song was appropriative of black women and their relationship with their hair.

“Hmm… Does that sound familiar to you? ‘Cause that sounds really familiar to me,” Princess Nokia says. “Oh my God. Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair? Hm, sounds about white.”

However, the plot continued to thicken after Princess Nokia was accused of beat theft herself. The rapper came under fire when a Producer KRS claimed she stole the beat from a sample pack with another artist by the name of Oshi.

What do you think about the similarity between “Bad Idea” and “Somebody That I Used To Know?”
