Ash Costello talks to fans following birthday wish list backlash

We’re full swing into February and quickly approaching New Years Day frontwoman Ash Costello’s birthday. Like many, the singer made a wish list of gifts she’d like to receive.

Costello shared the list via social media, which set off an array of fan reactions, many of whom took offense to its concept and began expressing their concern.

The vocalist first shared the list at the start of her birthday month, giving fans the option to purchase a gift for her if they chose to do so. Each item included a description of what she would do with it if a fan chose to purchase it and she explained she would be doing an unboxing video later.

“Thank you for checking out my birthday wishlist!” the list’s description reads. “I’m going to do an unboxing of bday presents and read your messages from it’s senders on my YouTube channel! Who doesn’t love presents for their birthday right?! I thought it would be really fun to open bday gifts from you guys for my channel! I am so grateful to receive any presents at all, it feels like being sent bday gifts from friends all over the world! So I thank you!!!!”

Some fans were excited and supportive.

While others were concerned and upset.

Costello caught wind of the latter reactions, and she took to her page to address the concerns:

“1. I’m not MAKING or convincing anyone to buy me anything. 2. That wishlist also has my mom, friends and family on it cause they asked what I’d like for my birthday. 3.I’ve also posted my PO Box where fans can send letters, art, or whatever FOR FREE if they wish.

“4. You’re not “calling me out” for anything. Fans ASK to send me things. No one HAS to, and that’s obvious when I post the PO Box option as well. 5. TONS of my friends have bday wishlists that I have purchased presents for them from. This isn’t a weird or abnormal thing.

“6. If you don’t like what’s on MY wishlist, well I don’t know what to tell ya. Go make your own. Thanks for sucking the fun out of it. I consider fans, friends and family. And friends get friends presents for their bday! Even handmade ones! So calm yourselves.

Costello explained it’s “so dumb that [she] even has to address that” and stated she also has a P.O. box where people can send her letters.

The singer reiterated that birthdays are supposed to be fun, reminding fans yet again they can choose not to buy anything.
