'Avengers: Endgame' surpasses 'Avatar' for highest-grossing film of all time

Yesterday was a very eventful and exciting day for Marvel fans. Marvel Studios took over San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H to unveil 10 upcoming projects in Phase 4, finally confirming the long-awaited Black Widow film among others.  Now, the celebration continues as the all-time box office record previously held by Avatar finally falls victim to “the snap.” The crown now belongs to Avengers: Endgame.

Avatar previously held the record with $2.787 billion, with all eyes on Endgame as the re-release pushed the film closer and closer to the record.

Last night, during Marvel Studios’ SDCC panel, President Kevin Feige took the stage to reveal the torch had finally been passed.

“Thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all-time,” Feige announced.

Official numbers will come out either later today or tomorrow, confirming the new box office record.

There’s a $500,000 difference between the two films, with analysts predicting the gap to close within a day. Hence the reason Feige was able to make the announcement at last night’s event.

The Russo Brothers took to Twitter to thank fans for their continued support.

“To the greatest fans in the universe, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you..”

Disney chairman Alan Horn said in a statement to Deadline, “A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights.”

Congrats Marvel Studios. You can now rest and watch the sunrise.
