'Avengers: Endgame' theory suggests one major villain may return

We may still have months to wait before Avengers: Endgame hits theaters, but that doesn’t stop fans from speculating what’s going to happen during the big showdown.

In a new theory, one fan is suggesting that we may see the return of Thor and Loki’s elder sister Hela — the Asgardian Goddess of Death.

Cate Blanchett’s Hela was seemingly killed during Thor: Ragnarok, by the sword of Surtur. That being said, fans think we’ll see her again in one of two Asgardian locations of after-life — Valhalla or Hel.

Originally shared to the /r/Marvel Studios subreddit, the theory is based around the production’s presence at Durham Cathedral. Fans speculate the cathedral could be used as a set piece for the setting of one of the after-life locations.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this particular cathedral either. Its exterior was briefly used during Vision and Corvus Glaive’s fight in Edinburgh during Avengers: Infinity War.

This time around, it looks like the interior of the cathedral is being used instead. In set photos leaked last year, fans were also able to catch a peek at a life-sized prop for Rocket Raccoon inside the building.

Since Rocket and Thor were becoming buddies in Infinity War, this theory suggests that the pair travel to either Valhalla or Hel, or maybe even both. The goal of the trip would be to assemble an army of undead warriors to help take down Thanos. Obviously, being the Goddess of Death and all, Hela would swing in to lead the army of dead beings into the fight.

Reddit user /u/melodicbeginning also fueled the theory, pointing out that Blanchett gave an interview in front of a particular statue. A statue that was also seen in one of the leaked set photos, as well as in one of Thor’s visions from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

It all seems to make so much sense! Could it be true? What do you think about this fan theory? Let us know in the comments!

Avengers: Endgame is set to hit theaters April 26.
