‘Avengers: Endgame’ VFX head details mistake that made it to theaters

Avenger’s: Endgame launched last year and absolutely dominated at the box office. It quickly grabbed the top spot atop the highest-grossing films of all-time list. While it didn’t grab any top awards, the Marvel film was a massive cinematic feat.

That being said, it doesn’t mean it was without any mistakes. A recent video shows Visual Effects Supervisor Matt Aitken from Weta Digital discussing one technical error that literally slipped through his team’s fingers.

Avengers: Endgame took the world by storm as the highly-anticipated end to Marvel’s Phase Three. Given the cliffhanger ending that Avengers: Infinity War ended with, fans couldn’t wait to see the conclusion.

With a reported budget of $356 million and box office gross of $2.8 billion, Avengers: Endgame was the most successful film of all time, by monetary standards. But even huge Disney flicks with massive budgets make mistakes. There’s simply not enough time or people to make a perfect film, especially with the massive amounts of CGI movies are employing now.

So, it only makes sense that a few problems would happen here and there. We get to see a couple of those in a recent interview on the YouTube channel Corridor Crew.

The interviewers point out an error that fans showed to them. In a rather important scene with the main antagonist Thanos, there is a brief moment where his fingers clip through his glove. The team simply didn’t notice it and it went to theaters with the error in the film.

The video discusses good and bad CGI, and when asked about the Thanos error, Aitken spills the beans.

“People pointed out to us, in this one shot of his glove you can see his finger bits clip through the glove a little bit,” the interview says.

“I know, we missed that,” Aitken points out.

“That’s something that just — nobody happened to see it until it was out in theaters?”

“Yeah. I wish we caught it at the time, Aitken says. “It just goes to show there’s always a little bit more that you could do. But yeah, we were doing a lot of work on the armor. You don’t want to constrain what [Thanos actor] Josh [Brolin] was doing on set, you want him to be able to perform and you just have to make the armor work to that. So there’s a lot of sleight of hand going on, bending of things that should be rigid.”

We understand not everything can be perfect and the error is so hard to spot that it makes sense it was overlooked.

More Marvel

Sony has done a fantastic job revamping the Spider-Man movies and it looks like they potentially have another spin-off film in the works.

While Morbius and Venom 2 are in the works at the moment, the company has a mystery film currently slated as “UNTITLED SONY/MARVEL” set for release in October 8, 2021.

According to Exhibitor Relations, a box-office watchdog, Sony is continuing to expand on the Spider-Man universe.

As Sony are only able to make Spider-Man films with the Disney buyout, the mystery film has to be related to the web-slinger.

Morbius is already set for release on July 31 ruling it out of contention.

It’s also highly unlikely to be the followup to Venom as that already has a release date of October 2, 2020.

The unknown film is also set to drop just a few months after the third Tom Holland starring Spider-Man movie is expected to arrive. The third installment featuring Holland is set for arrival on July 16, 2021 as of this time.

With these movies ruled out, we know what the new film won’t be, but there are so many characters in the Spider-Man universe they could explore.

Some likely options they could explore would be Sinister Six or Spider-Woman. With DC/Warner trying to capitalize on Suicide Squad, plus Wonderwoman and Captain Marvel doing well it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony try for similar dynamics. Take a look below for what some people are speculating it could be.
