‘Avengers: Endgame’ writers talk possibility of ‘X-Men’ reboot

The writers behind the latest box office hit Avengers: Endgame have their sights set on another project — rebooting X-Men.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote the latest MCU movie, spoke to the New York Times about the X-Men getting a possible reboot after Dark Phoenix.

The question came about when the interviews brought up Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox in March, which includes the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises. They asked the writers if Endgame could have featured any characters from either series. They said they weren’t legally allowed.

“I guess (the acquisition’s) done now but it wasn’t done then. They still have an X-Men movie. You can’t reboot them before they’re done. ‘Sorry to completely screw you.” Markus said.

So now, there is a possibility that they could make the reboot after Dark Phoenix hits theaters in June.

As far as Dark Phoenix, goes, Marvel icon Stan Lee. will not make a cameo in the film, but there will be a tribute to him.

CinemaBlend spoke with Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg and producer Hutch Parker to ask about a possible Lee cameo in the film.

“We don’t have a cameo. I’d rather say that than then keep it mysterious, out of respect for Stan,” Kinberg said. “We do have some tribute to him, and it’s something that obviously we weren’t thinking about when we were making the movie because he was still very much alive. And he’s been such a huge part of making these films over the years. He’s had cameos; he’s had input into the process of making them.”

Even though there won’t be a cameo, filmmakers say that Lee’s presence will still be very much felt by viewers.

“It already felt like a special film for the X-Men, because it is the culmination of all these movies in so many ways, and because Dark Phoenix is the ultimate X-Men run, ” he continued. “I think even more so, Stan Lee’s passing gives even more weight to this film for us, because X-Men, to me, and I think to a lot of fans, and to Stan in some ways, was his sort of ultimate achievement.”

The two Endgame writers are currently feeling the success of the film after its debut weekend. It officially had the biggest box office weekend in film history.

The latest Marvel film made an estimated $1.2 billion in the worldwide box office for its opening, according to Disney. It is the only film ever to cross the $1 billion mark for its debut.

It completely shattered records, with the previous film at the No. 1 spot being Avengers: Infinity War which made $640 million its opening weekend.

As far as domestic records go, the film came out on top as well. It made an estimated $350 million this weekend, passing Infinity War which made $258 million.

It was projected to make between $230 and $283 million domestically, which it far surpassed. Also, it had a worldwide projection of $800 million, which The Hollywood Reporter estimated it would surpass.

It is currently the second-highest rated MCU film on Rotten Tomatoes behind Black Panther.

Avengers: Endgame beat records on the first night of its debut, becoming the top domestic preview of all time after making $60 million on Thursday.

The film was honestly breaking records before it even came out. For one, it sold five times as many tickets as Infinity War during its first week of presales. This should come as no surprise with the demand of tickets being crazy enough for fans to spend upward of $15,000 for a pair.

Also, the film broke the record for Atom Tickets’ best-selling movie of all time in only 10 days.

The film is so big, it’s even caused some theaters to stay open 24-hours a day during its opening weekend to meet high demands. Those demands partly have to do with the fact that the film is long. It had a leaked runtime of more than three hours, which is pretty impressive considering there is some fake footage in the trailers to throw off potential spoilers.

It was previously announced that Endgame would close out Phase 3 of the MCU. However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed he now has other plans.

Avengers: Endgame is monumental for so many ways. For one, it features the final cameo by Marvel legend Stan Lee, who passed away last year at age 95. Then, it was revealed that Marvel actually compiled all of Lee’s cameos and behind-the-scenes footage into a video, that they might release with the Endgame DVD.

In other news, Twitter users were recently granted tons of emojis of nearly all the characters in the film.

While you’re online playing with all the new MCU emojis, be careful to avoid possible spoilers as footage from the film is reportedly leaked and available online. Well, at least before you head to the theater and just finally see the film.

And if you have seen the movie, don’t ruin it for others. One man did that outside the theater which lead to him being beat up.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now. Check out one of the trailers below.
