Radio station plays "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for 2 hours straight

WAKY 103.5 FM in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, played “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” for two hours straight on Sunday, People reports, the radio station saying it’s “not afraid” to play the controversial Christmas song for a marathon chunk of airtime.

The defiant move follows the recent upswell of public disagreement after radio stations across the U.S. stopped playing the song when listeners started speaking up about the tune’s “creepy” and seemingly coercive lyrical content.

“BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!,” the Hardin County radio station announced on their Facebook page this past Sunday morning. “We like it and we’re not afraid to play it on WAKY for the next couple of hours!” See the post below:

WAKY joins at least one other station in adding “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” back into their regular Christmas rotation. But, in the wake of the #MeToo movement, the song’s detractors say its lyrical drive is unambiguously manipulative.

According to Stereogum, the first radio station to ban the song this year was WDOK Star102 FM in Cleveland, Ohio. After their initial protest of the song, other stations began to get on board with removing the song from their holiday playlist.

Despite taking a poll that showed 95% of people wanting the song to stay, the Cleveland station ultimately decided to nix it. WDOK host Desiray says that the song’s morals aren’t something appropriate for impressionable young folks.

“People might say, ‘oh, enough with that #MeToo,’ but if you really put that aside and listen to the lyrics, it’s not something I would want my daughter to be in that kind of a situation,” Desiray says in a story with KATV. “The tune might be catchy, but let’s maybe not promote that sort of an idea.”
