For those who don't know, Bad Religion vocalist Greg Graffin is a well-educated man. He's received a master's degree at UCLA and a PhD from Cornell University then went on to teach at UCLA and co-teach at Cornell as well. Graffin even has an ancient bird named after him. Furthermore, Graffin is an author and as a follow-up to his 2010 book Anarchy Evolution, the polymath will release Population Wars: A New Perspective on Competition and Coexistence on September 15.
A synopsis of Population Wars reads:
In Population Wars, Greg Graffin points to where the mainstream view of evolutionary theory has led us astray. That misunderstanding has allowed us to justify wars on every level, whether against bacterial colonies or human societies, even when other, less violent solutions may be available. Through tales of mass extinctions, developing immune systems, human warfare, the American industrial heartland, and our degrading modern environment, Graffin demonstrates how an oversimplified idea of war, with its victorious winners and vanquished losers, prevents us from responding to the real problems we face. Along the way, Graffin reveals a paradox: When we challenge conventional definitions of war, we are left with a new problem, how to define ourselves.
Population Wars is available to pre-order now and comes included in a bundle with an exclusive seven-inch vinyl record and an 'I'd Rather Be Reading Graffin' t-shirt. Below, you can find the upcoming live performance dates where Graffin will discuss the book and his music, perform some acoustic songs and do a Q&A with attendees.
