Beto O'Rourke vs. Ted Cruz

U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke is the skateboarding, music-loving Democratic challenger to Republican Ted Cruz in Texas’ intensifying 2018 Senate race. And the Lone Star State’s Republican Party really wants you to know it.

The GOP there has been tweeting photos of O’Rourke skating, rocking and just generally appearing relatable (as opposed to being a two-faced morality robot) in what seems an effort to discredit the congressman and save Cruz’s lead.

The confused attack was fueled by an apparent misunderstanding among the candidates over debate availability, per SPIN. O’Rourke couldn’t make a proposed debate last Friday, which seemingly ignited the dis campaign.

So what exactly did the GOP do? They kicked things off Tuesday by tweeting a falsely captioned pic of the congressman with a skateboard. It lampooned O’Rourke and a “killer board” that caused him to “skate on the debate.”

The meme took its cue from a viral video of the politician skateboarding in a Whataburger parking lot. Later, the Texas GOP shared a promo pic of O’Rourke’s old punk band. Because, you know, being in a band makes you a flake.

Believe it or not, the congressman did play in El Paso hardcore act Foss with At The Drive In‘s Cedric Bixler-Zavala. And when the WaPo‘s calling the politician’s old photos “cool,” you know O’Rourke’s Senate bid has captured the nation’s attention.

Texas Republicans aim low at Beto

But when fighting the candidate’s appeal over a blobfish didn’t work, the Grand Old Party dug up a mugshot from O’Rourke’s ’90s DWI arrest. O’Rourke countered with a statement reiterating his criminal justice reform views, calling the incident a “serious mistake for which there is no excuse.”

Because it’s not like any Republican leaders were ever nabbed for driving under the influence, right? Below, see the Texas GOP’s recent Beto tweets and watch the video of O’Rourke shredding some burger joint blacktop.

And just to remind you of Ted Cruz’s past, he once bought 100 cans of soup (on his honeymoon) and endorsed the man who called his father a JFK assassination conspirator. Also, some people reportedly think he’s the Zodiac Killer.
