Billie Eilish gets first AMAs win in alternative rock category

Billie Eilish won her first American Music Award for the favorite artist in the alternative rock category. 

The 17-year-old pop star was up against Imagine Dragons and Panic! At The Disco for the first award of the night.

“I grew up being in love with all of you,” Eilish said to all of the artists sitting in the front row. “And the fact that you are all looking at me, I cannot believe this.” 

Eilish is nominated for a total of six awards across the night, as is Ariana Grande. The two female artsit follow Post Malone for with the most AMAs nominations at seven. 

Lil Nas X is up for five awards with “Old Town Road” falling into “Collab of the Year” and continuing to break genre barriers with a “Favorite Song – Pop/Rock” and “Favorite Song – Rap/Hip-Hop” nods.

The 47th American Music Awards was held Nov. 24 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Ciara hosted the show, which aired live on ABC. You can see the full list of award winners here

The Grammys have announced their nominees for this year and both Billie Eilish and Lizzo have made history with their nominations.

The pair were both put up for awards in the four biggest categories which has never happened to two artists in the same year while Eilish has also become the youngest artist nominated in these categories.

The artists are both being nominated for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist.

Only 10 artists have ever had this honor before including Cyndi Lauper in 1985, Mariah Carey in 1991 and most recently Sam Smith in 2015.

Lizzo earned eight Grammy nominations making her the most nominated artist of the year. On top of the big four categories, she’s also up for Best Pop Solo Performance (“Truth Hurts”), Best R&B Performance (“Exactly How I Feel” featuring Gucci Mane), Best R&B Performance (“Jerome”) and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Eilish meanwhile has earned six nominations and is the youngest artist to ever receive nominations in the four big categories. The other two categories Eilish is up for include Best Pop Solo Performance (“Bad Guy”) and Best Pop Vocal Album.

“I could have bet you money that would never happen,” Eilish told ET. “I don’t think I will be on stage, you know? … It’s so weird when people think they’re going to be huge. God, that’s so weird. I never in a million years would have thought this sh*t would happen.”
