Billie Eilish and FINNEAS win historic 2021 Record Of The Year Grammy

Billie Eilish and FINNEAS have just made history with their Record Of The Year win for “everything i wanted.” They are now the third artists to ever win Record Of The Year back-to-back. Last year, they took home the coveted award for “bad guy,” off of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?. U2 and Roberta Flack are the only two other artists to accomplish this feat.

U2 won Record Of The Year in 2001 for “Beautiful Day” and 2002 for “Walk On.” Meanwhile, Flack took home the award in 1973 for “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” and in 1974 for “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

During their speech, Eilish gave praise to Megan Thee Stallion who was nominated for Record Of The Year for her Beyonce collab “Savage Remix.” Eilish said that she was going to write a speech about how Megan Thee Stallion should’ve won the award. However, Eilish didn’t end up writing the speech because she didn’t think she would win for “everything i wanted.”

Eilish and FINNEAS have officially won Best Song Written For Visual Media at the 2021 Grammy Awards for their James Bond theme song “No Time To Die.”

Eilish and FINNEAS were up against Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s “Beautiful Ghosts” from Cats, Cynthia Erivo‘s “Stand Up” from Harriet and Idina Menzel and AURORA‘s “Into The Unknown” from Frozen 2 in the category. Brandi Carlile‘s “Carried Me With You” from Disney‘s Onward was also nominated for this award.

This year, Eilish is up for three other awards including Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “everything i wanted.” Song Of The Year went to H.E.R. for “I Can’t Breathe” and Best Pop Solo Performance went to Harry Styles for “Watermelon Sugar.”

In the acceptance speech, Eilish thanks everyone involved with No Time To Die including Hans Zimmer and the film’s star Daniel Craig. As for FINNEAS, who only had a few seconds to speak, he thanked Eilish for letting him write the song with her. He also acknowledged how lucky he feels to be her brother.

According to Google Trends, her 2020 performance of “when the party’s over” with FINNEAS was the most-searched Grammys performances on the internet last year.

Of course, no one can forget about the historic night Eilish had at the Grammys in 2020. As a first-time nominee, she was up for six awards. Although Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” won Best Pop Vocal Performance, Eilish took home the five other awards she was nominated for.

Alongside FINNEAS, who rocked some My Chemical Romance merch at an afterparty, Eilish swept the major categories and won Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for “bad guy.” To top it all off, she also won Best New Artist.

The record-breaking accomplishment was historic in a number of ways. In particular, it was the first time in Grammys history a woman won all four major categories in one night. Eilish is also the youngest artist to achieve this feat, too. Shortly after her big night, Eilish revealed that she was actually embarrassed by the number of awards she won.

“I was dead surprised,” she told Dazed in April. “And I was embarrassed, dude, I was fuckin’ embarrassed. I was in front of Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey and fuckin’ Beyoncé is nominated, and I win. I was like, ‘Nooooo…’”

Last month, she even showed just how she found out about her historic nominations. A clip of her learning the news is featured in the intimate new Apple TV+ documentary The World’s A Little Blurry.

Eilish’s 2020 Grammy wins made history in other ways, too. According to Google Trends, she had the most-searched Grammys red carpet look last year. “bad guy” is also the 5th most Googled Song Of The Year track ever. Lorde’s “Royals” takes the top spot which won the category in 2014. Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” are also included on the list.

Just before her Grammys sweep, Eilish gave fans a taste of her new music. In mid-November, she released “everything i wanted” which has earned three Grammy nominations this year. Eilish directed the immersive video for the song which was co-written with FINNEAS.

“My brother and I wrote this song about each other,” Eilish said in a press release. “And I wanted to create a visual that emphasizes that no matter what, we’ll be there for each other through everything. This is the second video I’ve directed of mine. We worked so hard, for hours and hours on end.”

Although Eilish said she had no plans to release an album in 2020, she still managed to deliver new music. In February, Eilish’s theme song for the new James Bond film No Time To Die made its debut. Back in October, Eilish and FINNEAS revealed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon that they worked out the melody for the song before getting started on the lyrics.

“What’s funny is that we kind of started with making sure we got a melody that we felt was really solid before we tried any lyrics out,” Eilish said. “We both think it’s really important to have the title of the movie in the song and have the song be called that. It wouldn’t have been satisfying otherwise.”

In March, Eilish hit the road for her WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? world tour. However, once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Eilish had to postpone the North American leg of the tour. Eventually, the entire tour was postponed. With her newfound time off, Eilish began work on her new album. While in coronavirus lockdown, it took her a few weeks to find inspiration to start creating.

“I was fully uninspired for the first three weeks of this,” she told Zane Lowe during an Apple Music interview. “I was not about to make music and I don’t know why. It was just like, ‘This is not interesting to me right now.’ It was annoying though because that’s the kind of thing you want to be doing in quarantine. But I wasn’t feeling it.”

Over the past year, Eilish has offered a few sneak peeks into her upcoming release. Back in July, she debuted her emotional single “my future” along with an animated video. Then, in November, she treated fans to her carefree video for “Therefore I Am.” More recently, she dropped her highly-anticipated collaboration with Rosalía called “Lo Vas A Olvidar” which premiered during a new episode of Euphoria.

Back in December, Eilish shared that her new music era is starting after the release of The World’s A Little Blurry which debuted last month. A few months later, she also cryptically confirmed exactly how many songs are on the next release.

“I have a fun story to tell you, but first, fuck you guys,” she said on Instagram. “Stop making fun of me oh my god, I’m fucking making you an album. I will not put it out if you keep making fun of my hair, shut up. I’m changing it after the doc [documentary] comes out, it will be the end of an era. I’m gonna give you a new era, I have announcements to make. I have some shit to put out. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. Leave me alone [and] let me live with my fucking hair that I’ve had for far too long.”
