Billie Joe Armstrong ponders gender-swapped ‘American Idiot’ musical
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has an interesting suggestion for a whole new version of musical based on the album of the same name, American Idiot.
Armstrong went to see a production of the musical at Chapman College in California. It was there he came up with the idea.

The musician shared a photo to congratulate the cast and make a suggestion for a gender-swapped production of the show.
“On a side note I was wondering what it would be like if someone did a production where the men and women switched roles. Johnny be played by a woman? Whatsername be Whatshisface? I like it,” he wrote.

Who knows if this means the frontman is plotting a whole new musical, or if he was just thinking out loud. Either way, we agree with him that it’d definitely be cool to see a gender-swapped version.
Green Day are under fire recently following the announcement of their new feminist-inspired book, Last Of The American Girls.
Described by the publisher as “an inspiring homage and handbook for the rebellious everywoman who refuses to capitulate,” fans have raised questions concerning the all-male team behind the book.
Written by bandmates Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, it marks their debut book. However, the trio’s choice of male illustrator in Frank Caruso to bring the picture book to life is being scrutinized.
Armstrong recently spoke to Blunt about the book, voicing his desire to empower women and identifying his muse for the project, his wife.
“Then I started getting into more of my own beliefs—anything from a little book of conspiracies to playing vinyl records or something,” he says. “It’s sort of about an empowering, sort of subterranean kind of lifestyle, but at the same time, there’s a new era coming in with the way we all need to live.”
Last Of The American Girls will be available for purchase Oct. 29.
