Billie Joe Armstrong talks Green Day classic, says he had no intention of doing acoustic songs

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life),” is a fan-favorite Green Day track, and now, the band’s frontman has opened up about the experience of writing the 1997 track. The band’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong recently sat with Krissy Teegerstrom of the Beyond + Back’ podcast, where they discussed the creative process of making music.

During the podcast, the subject of taking creative risks came up, and that’s where Armstrong explained what happened after the band took a risk with the classic track.

On the subject, Armstrong discussed how the incredibly popular Green Day hit came to be, explaining that he didn’t actually intend for the band to have any acoustic songs:

“I had no intention of starting any kind of acoustic thing with Green Day, and I just wrote it, it was just sort of, like, from the heart to the four-track,” Armstrong said. “You make these decisions…well, you can stay in your comfort zone or you can try doing this song…put it out there and see what happens.”

He then continued on the say:

“I remember the first time I ever sang it live. We were somewhere on the east coast, we’re on the Nimrod tour, and then I was like ‘Ok, I’m gonna sing this song. I’m gonna do it’.”

While he was a little apprehensive and “totally” scared about playing the track, with the support of the band and a little bit of courage, he was able to play the song in front of the crowd.

“[The band were] the first ones to go ‘Billie is the most insecure person I’ve ever met in my life, but he does it anyway…’ so I shotgunned two beers and then I went out and did it, and it worked. And people were really into it and singing along…

It was like a breakthrough…as soon as you hit that breakthrough, instantly in your mind you start going ‘I can do this. What if I try playing it a little more country music? Or what if I tried using loops and stuff like that?’ Automatically it gives you confidence.”
