Smashing Pumpkins figurehead, Nickelback defender and cat lover Billy Corgan talks to USA Today this week about the events surrounding the recent resurrection of his staple alt-rock act and notes his often bratty tenor on Instagram.
“Probably the greatest compliment that I get from fans is, ‘We like that you do this because it’s your own voice. If you’re being a brat, we know it’s you being a brat,'” explains Corgan of his sometimes abrasive Insta-presence. “They don’t wonder if it’s a media contrivance.”
A reaction to his Pumpkins persona being vilified, the musician says that, “As somebody who’s had my avatar stolen by the media and turned into something that I’m not, I quite like reinforcing my brand in line with who I am as a person.”
The longtime Smashing Pumpkin also discusses being a dad. Just last month, Corgan and his longtime partner, Chloe Mendel, welcomed their second child, a daughter, as reported by Page Six. The couple also have a three-year-old son.
“I’m almost 52, so having kids late in life has been a pretty wild adventure,” he gestures of late fatherhood. “I appreciate that I waited because I am really ready to be there for my children and love my children to the best of my ability. But at the same time, I also (understand) why parenting is such a difficult thing for anybody because it requires so much energy and devotion. I’m in awe of any parent who does it well.”
The Pumpkins’ new album Shiny And Oh So Bright is out tomorrow, Nov. 16.
