Bishop Briggs takes her heart back in new "Champion" video

Bishop Briggs has never been shy about her badass side, and that rings especially true in her latest music video for “Champion.”

Briggs isn’t your regular scorned bride in the video. She takes matters into her own hands against the one who wronged her, and a few others along the way.

Working in perfect tandem with the video, the track is a triumphant, self-empowering outcry that dares listeners to retake what belongs to them.

For Briggs, the object she looked to take back was confidence in herself. The singer says the track was written at a dark time when rules and societal norms were weighing down on her.

“‘Champion’ is a song that I wrote when my self-esteem was at an all-time low,” she explains. “As a woman, I feel like I have been socially trained to be so many things at once—sexy yet sweet, confident yet humble, independent yet submissive, smart but not too smart—the list is never-ending.”

Briggs says the most important thing is self-worth, even if society pushes you to be something you aren’t.

“Writing this song helped me look at the question: what if I could just be myself?” she says. “What if there was a world where my vulnerability was what made me powerful? What if there was a day I could proudly, without hesitation, look in the mirror and say, ‘I am a champion,’ purely because I’m choosing to be myself? ‘Champion’ is about accepting yourself today, as you are.”

“Champion” is set to make its TV debut July 29 on The Late Late Show With James Corden. The track is available for streaming and download here.
