‘Black Mirror’ to drop Nine Inch Nails pop revamp starring Miley Cyrus

Black Mirror season 5 finally arrived on Netflix last week. It’s several days later and yet Miley Cyrus giving Nine Inch Nails track “Head Like A Hole” a pop twist is still one of the most talked about moments.

Now, the sci-fi show is revealing fans will be getting the full-on music video from Cyrus’ character.

The third Black Mirror episode, “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” has the singer/actress in the role of a pop star. However, she’s not just singing any old pop tracks or even her own.

As the Netflix description reads, the third episode is about, “A lonely teen becomes obsessed with a robot doll based on her pop star idol, Ashley O—just as the real Ashley’s life begins to unravel.”

Within the episode, Cyrus performs as Ashley O, but the track may sound a bit familiar. Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker reveals he penned new lyrics to be placed over the 1989 Nine Inch Nail track “Head Like A Hole” to produce Ashley O’s “On A Roll.”

Fans were digging Ashley O’s music, even requesting that Cyrus release it herself. The day after the season’s premiere, the singer teased that the Black Mirror track was coming.

Today, the Black Mirror account confirmed the speculation, stating a music video for “On A Roll” is headed our way tomorrow.

As mentioned, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker gave the lyrics an update.

In “Head Like A Hole,” frontman Trent Reznor sings, “Head like a hole / Black as your soul / I’d rather die than give you control / Bow down before the one you serve / You’re going to get what you deserve.”

In Black Mirror, Cyrus sings, “Hey there, whoah-ho, I’m on a roll / Riding so high, achieving my goals / I’m so stoked on ambition and verve / I’m gonna get what I deserve.”

Brooker got the sample cleared by Reznor personally who was pretty happy with it.

“Trent got it straight away,” Brooker said at a press conference. “It was via email and he was really happy pretty quickly. He wanted to see the script and I got to re-write his lyrics in a chirpy way.

“I’m not the best lyricist in the world,” he continued. “In the first song she’s singing: ‘I’m stoked on ambition and verve’ instead of ‘You’re gonna get what you deserve’.”

“He thought it was very funny,” executive producer Annabel Jones added. “He found the dark comedy very entertaining. There are lots of dark concepts in the film and we just enjoy that sort of childish subversion of them.”

Nine Inch Nails were apparently so into the collab that the band took it to some new merch. The band announced a new T-shirt inspired by the series which displays their “Head Like A Hole” lyrics in a pop star-like font. The shirt is available for preorder here.
