‘Black Panther’ brings Marvel its first Oscar win in history

Black Panther made history at the Oscars after becoming the first Marvel movie to win an Academy Award.

The film’s nomination was historic in itself as it was the first time a superhero movie was nominated for Best Picture. It didn’t win, though, as Green Book took that award home.

Black Panther did win several awards during the course of the night. It won for Costume Design, Production Design and Original Score. Those three awards mark a first for Marvel.

Also in a historic moment, designer Ruth Carter’s win for costumes was the first time a black woman has ever won in the category.

Before the ceremony, Disney CEO Bob Iger congratulated the film for already winning because of the history it made.

“You already won: you made history! Thanks for making us feel proud, and reminding us of the power we have as a force for good and a force for change in the world,” the tweet reads.

The film was nominated for seven awards total. Its nominations should really come as no surprise due to the trailblazer’s reception since hitting theaters in February 2018.

With just a little over a month in theaters, it became the highest-grossing superhero film of all time by passing up previous record holder, The Avengers.

In nearly the same amount of time, it became the most tweeted about movie ever. After a month, the flick was tweeted about more than 35 million times, beating out previous record holders Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which were bumped to second and third place, respectively.
