Only one Blockbuster store exists on the planet anymore

Going to the video store to rent movies might not be as popular as it use to be, but now it’s nearly impossible—there’s only one Blockbuster left on the planet.

Yes, that’s right, the once-popular video store chain currently only has one open location in existence.

The Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon is now all that’s left after the second-final store in Australia announced it was closing its doors last week.

The Oregon location has been open for more than 20 years. It offers both new and old movie releases for customers.

“You can go to Redbox and you can get the new titles, but they don’t have the older ones,”  Sandi Harding, the general manager of the last store, said. “Netflix and Amazon don’t have everything, either.”

Before there was only one store, Blockbuster had nearly 9,000 storefronts in the U.S. in 2004. The chain began in 1989, with a new store opening every 17 hours. Now, this was long before the rise of streaming which basically killed the video store business entirely.

Dish Network bought the chain in 2011 and closed most of the remaining locations. However, the Bend store pays a licensing fee to Dish to keep the store open.
